Mars is the fourth
planet from the Sun. It is smaller than every other
planet in the solar system except Mercury. Mars was
the Roman god of war and it is redish to the eye due to iron
oxide prevalant on its surface. Since mars has no oceans,
its entire surface is dry, and in spite of its small size, the
surface area is about the same as the total dry land on Earth.
Mars has about the same day length as earth, but its year is
twice as long. This is one of thousands of photos taken in
2003 during the closes approach of Mars to Earth.
